GeneChip™ technology, Stephen Fodor
Interviewee: Stephen Fodor. Stephen Fodor talks about bringing the knowledge gathered by the Human Genome Project to the individual researcher. (DNAi Location: Applications > Genes and medicine > Genetic profiling > Stephen Fodor > GeneChip™ technology)
Well, in the early '80s the decision had been made to attempt to sequence the human genome. And in the later part of that decade we were thinking about how to create a technology that could actually bring the human genome to the individual researcher. And the DNA chip technology, or the GeneChip™ technology is the technology that can actually perform that. It's a marriage of both life sciences chemistry with Silicon Valley manufacturing processes that allow you to take the basic building blocks of DNA, the A, the C, the G and the T, and build different combinations of those building blocks in order to make different strands of DNA.
