Understanding genes and health, Stephen Fodor
Interviewee: Stephen Fodor. Stephen Fodor talks about understanding genes and health.
We can ask the question which genes are turned on and off, by looking at expression levels, that is the MRNA that is produced directly off the DNA can be analysed on these chips. Now there are a lot of studies that will be done looking at the expression of the genome, all the way from looking at developmental issues, what makes one cell different than another, looking at disease issues, why is this cell sick, response issues if I treat it with a drug, what effect does it have, and of course simple therapeutic monitoring or signature issues that can be predictive for what we might, therapeutic outcomes for example. These are all areas that we need to study in different individuals, in different tissue types, in different organisms, in order to understand what is the basic circuitry of life and what does it mean with respect to health.
