One way of looking at it is that the genome sequence is in a sense the genome's vocabulary. It's the set of all the words that the genome can use to write a script that specifies the characteristics of a cell and tells it how to behave in a particular physiological or developmental program. It writes that script by using specific genes, subsets of the genes, in specific temporal programs, just as you use specific words from your vocabulary to accomplish different things.
