The genome is the script, Patrick Brown

Interviewee: Pat Brown. Pat Brown draws an analogy between the genome and a script that tells a cell how to behave. (DNAi Location: Applications > Genes and medicine > Genetic profiling > Patrick Brown > The genome is the script)

One way of looking at it is that the genome sequence is in a sense the genome's vocabulary. It's the set of all the words that the genome can use to write a script that specifies the characteristics of a cell and tells it how to behave in a particular physiological or developmental program. It writes that script by using specific genes, subsets of the genes, in specific temporal programs, just as you use specific words from your vocabulary to accomplish different things.
