Biology is complicated, Craig Venter
Interviewee: Craig Venter. Craig Venter talks about biology is complicated.
Biology is complicated, that's one of the key messages that came out of the genome. Fifty years ago this dogma developed - the Central Dogma of biology of one gene, one RNA, one protein, one function. It is so clearly absurd looking back on that, how narrow and limited that thinking was. Now we know we have one gene, multiple RNAs; one gene, multiple proteins, each protein can have multiple functions. We have a hundred trillion cells, the complexity of our biology depends on so many things after the genetic code, but it's not this simplistic view of the world, that's why so many people wanted to have a large number of genes and were disappointed by it. You know, our complexity is immense, we need new tools if we're going to ever go forward to really understand why we're alive and how we came to be.
