By this point, most scientists believed that DNA carried hereditary information. So having solved the structure, Watson and Crick's comment was a teaser, in reference to two fairly obvious questions. If DNA is in the shape of a twisted ladder, then:
how is the information stored in the DNA molecule passed on to the next generation?
how is the information stored in the DNA molecule used to make protein?
