The idea was that when you had the gene galactosidase, the enzyme synthesis starts immediately. Now if we were right and if there was no stable ribosome, if you can remove the gene then it should stop. And we could remove the gene because we had done in Paris an experiment where we loaded the donor chromosome with P32, radioactive P32, then let it go into the recipient, then put it in the cold and let it decay and see whether once the chromosome has been decaying it still makes enzyme on there, and the answer was no. That is as soon as the gene is destroyed by P32 decay, then the capacity to produce the enzyme is stopped.
