The Making of Ötzi the Iceman

The DNALC worked with the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology to make two 3D replicas of the Ötzi mummy; one will be installed in an exhibit being developed at the DNALC in Cold Spring Harbor and the other in the future DNALC in NYC. These will be the only authorized replicas of Ötzi outside of the South Tyrol Museum. The replica were made by Gary Staab, the leading artist specializing in natural history and prehistoric life models for museums. The initial replica was made by large-scale 3D printing from the CT scan. The 3D print was used to make a rubber mold, from which a durable resin cast will be made. This was followed by weeks of finishing and painting, based upon an existing photographic atlas of Ötzi. The whole process of creating the replica and installing it at the DNALC will be followed in a NOVA television special, "The Iceman Reborn," which is being produced by Bsquared Media. The South Tyrol Museum is interested in having us help them institute our experiment with student mitochondrial DNA, which includes a comparison with Ötzi's DNA.
