Neandertal anatomy, Chris Stringer
Interviewee: Chris Stringer. Human origins expert Chris Stringer takes us on a tour of the bones from a Neandertal. (DNAi Location: Applications > Human origins > Comparisons > Bones > The Neandertal Body)
In the rest of the body, they tend to be short and wide, very stocky people, very powerfully built, and their skeletons were built to withstand a lot of stress and strain so they had hard lives and their skeletons were built to withstand those hard lives. In the pelvis, it's a very wide pelvis; there's no evidence they couldn't walk upright as well as we can, but certainly their overall body shape was short and wide, rather short extremities to the limbs. Again, some people see this physique as being a response to life and evolution under cold conditions.
