Well he certainly was a good scientist in that he was the first to establish a Department of Genetics in the United States, he immediately sensed that the rediscovery of Mendel's laws was a big event, possibly he could understand or put into practice Francis Galton's wish of eugenics, the selective improvement of humans through better breeding. The thing was to identify unfit families.
