Benno Müller-Hill takes James Watson on a tour of the gas chamber at Bernberg Psychiatric Hospital, one of six euthanasia facilities for mental patients established in 1940-41. The Bernberg gas chamber was used to kill mentally ill patients – including children – and, later, the sick from the concentration camps. Interviewer: So who was killed in here? Müller-Hill: So these were mentally ill people who supposedly had no chance to be healed, all treatment was in vain, supposedly. And now... Watson: Or in some case children. Müller-Hill: And also children, including children. And later also after 1942 when the actions stopped, people from concentration camps who were very weak and sick, Jews, Communists, Social Democrats.
