Holmes' conclusions at Buck vs. Bell, Paul Lombardo
Interviewee: Paul Lombardo. In the Supreme Court decision, Justice Holmes compared sterilization for feeblemindedness to a vaccination for smallpox. (DNAi Location: Chronicle > Trial of Carrie Buck > Epilogue > A false analogy)
Justice Holmes' opinion in the Buck case concluded that there was little difference between a vaccination for smallpox and an operation to interrupt someone's reproductive potential. In fact this was a false analogy: the vaccination case upon which his notion rested, only fined a man five dollars who refused to be vaccinated.
