The value of diversity, Kay Jamison

Interviewee: Kay Jamison. We need to provide people with treatment options for mental disorders, rather than narrowing the range of human temperament and intellectual styles. Here Kay Jamison discusses the eugenic quandry we face when a prenatal test for manic depression becomes available. (DNAi Location: Chronicle > Living with eugenics > Epilogue > Valuing diversity)

I love the fact that we are as diverse a species as we are, I love the fact that we have such a diversity of temperament and such a diversity of intellectual styles and ways of seeing the world and ways of going through the world. And I don't want to start narrowing that range, you know, I think I want to give people a lot of options in terms of treatment and a lot of options about what they do with their lives. I don't want to give people a sense that they have to start narrowing and narrowing and narrowing and it producing a kind of little "vanilla children." It's a kind of a ghastly thought.
